Fire breaks out at Schnitzer Steel in Oakland

OAKLAND – Crews on Wednesday night were battling a fire at Schnitzer Steel near the Port of Oakland.

The blaze was reported shortly before 6 p.m. at the business, said Michael Hunt, a spokesperson for the Oakland Fire Department. The business, located at 1101 Embarcadero Road, specializes in collecting, processing and selling recycled steel.

Smoke from the fire was visible for miles.

As of 6:20 p.m., the fire was contained to a single pile of debris but not yet under control, Hunt said.

A fire engine was putting water on the fire and was expected to remain at the scene for several hours, Hunt said. The incident commander also requested the Alameda Fire Department’s fire boat to provide support from the estuary.

There was no fire threat to surrounding residences and businesses, according to Hunt.

Smoke from the fire was expected to travel south Thursday night and impact air quality, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said in a social media post.

The fire department advised residents to take precautionary health measures such as avoiding the Jack London Square area and keeping windows closed for the next several hours.

As the fire continues to produce smoke, a hazardous materials team will conduct air quality testing, the fire department said in a social media post, adding that it will also work with Alameda County health officials to provide air quality updates and guidance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
